The Children’s Anorectal Physiology team at NHS Barts Health were after an animation to help ease anxieties and apprehensions for children who have trouble going to the toilet.
We wanted to discover what the children and young people were thinking and feeling during their trip to the hospital. So, we ran a creative workshop with young volunteers where we presented three visual concepts and narrative. Together we explored overall look and feel, narrative and character names.
Through this workshop we developed the style and narrative that had most positive feedback in the workshop.
We landed on the main character being Captain Poo and developed their character design to reflect their fun and cheeky personality.

We even made a plushie of Captain Poo for children to hold for comfort when undergoing tests or talking to doctors.
